wildlife conservation society wcs African Painted Dog Pups on Somkhanda!

Camera traps at the den site give in-depth data which we wouldn’t usually be privy to. An understanding of animal behaviour is important if conservation initiatives are to be effective. These cameras are helping us to understand how often the Painted Dogs are feeding the pups, pup mortality, reasons for moving to a new site, the presence of predators and the pack's social dynamics, for example.

In this clip you will see the adults return to the den after a hunt, greet the Painted Dog pups with much excitement and then move off to feed. Watching the pups play aids in recognising which individuals assert their dominance and push boundaries compared to those who show more subservience. Watching them play is also really "good for the soul".

Wildlife ACT, Wildlands, a programme of WILDTRUST, the Gumbi community & the Emvokweni Community Trust work closely together to ensure that Somkhanda’s endangered species are closely monitored and protected.
