This is Mr Kek Siew Kok. After being trained in first aid, he joined the Singapore branch of the British Red Cross Society back in 1953 to put his first aid skills to good use. He joined as a member of the Voluntary Aid Detachment. Over the years, he had responded to major local disasters including the Bukit Ho Swee Fire in 1961, Spyros Explosion in 1978, cable car accident in 1983 and Hotel New World Collapse in 1986. Besides that, he was deployed for Night Ambulance Service in the 1960s.

Our people drive the work that we do at Singapore Red Cross. For World Red Cross Day, we celebrate 6 amazing individuals, who serve the vulnerable community tirelessly and bring a smile to those they've touched.

Tracy Koh is an instructor at Singapore Red Cross Academy, and serves as a volunteer for Community First Aid and First Aider on Wheels. She is also a Red Cross Youth Volunteer Officer. It doesn't take much to make someone smile or to encourage positive change in the society, Tracy does both whenever she wears her First Aids on Wheels volunteer hat.

Thank you to the amazing students of Republic Polytechnic's Diploma in Mass Communications, Nurul Sabrina, Amanda Yeung, Sng Jorge and Marcellin Angelo, who helped bring this video to life!

Once upon a time, Mdm Koh had to leave her disabled daughter, Sor Bee, alone at home, so she could earn a living. As a result, Sor Bee would often fall and hurt herself. Today, Sor Bee receives the care she needs at Red Cross Home for the Disabled, and Mdm Koh is glad, and relieved.

Established in 2011, the Red Cross Day Activity Centre for the Disabled was first sited with the Red Cross Home for the Disabled at Family Link@Lengkok Bahru, before moving to a standalone site at Jurong West.

We provide day care services to those who can return home to their loved ones in the evenings, providing respite for caregivers during the day. Our programme engages persons with disabilities in daily and community living skills, to maximise their independence. We offer social, recreational and therapeutic activities for our clients.

Disasters and conflicts can result in survivors experiencing severe psychosocial consequences. While emotional wounds are less visible than physical cuts or the loss of a home, the mental recovery process takes far longer. Thus, early psychosocial support is important to help affected communities cope with tragedies.

Psychosocial support is an integral part of the International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies' (IFRC) emergency response, and can help individuals and communities to heal psychological wounds and rebuild social structures after emergencies and critical events. At times, psychosocial support can even help encourage passive victims to become active survivors.

This is the psychosocial objective that the Singapore Red Cross aims to achieve. Through the Academy's psychosocial support courses, participants will gain valuable skills, as well as a deeper understanding and appreciation to promote, protect, and support the well-being of populations affected by crises. Course graduates will be fully adept at planning activities that can reduce psychosocial vulnerabilities, and ultimately enhance community resilience to disasters.

This is Mr Benjamin William. After serving as a Diplomat for 30 years with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, he was seconded to the Singapore Red Cross (SRC) as a Director of the International Services department in April 2001. When Former Secretary General Christopher Chua decided to step down, Mr William was asked to take on the role of the Secretary General, which he took on in March 2012.

Since taking over the helm, SRC had launched services ElderAid, FoodAid, Home Monitoring and Eldercare, Community Health on Wheels to cater to the growing elderly population and the vulnerable who have fallen through the cracks of the society’s social safety nets. Under his leadership, the Red Cross Training Centre was rebranded the Singapore Red Cross Academy to incorporate training, not just in first aid but also in humanitarian work. The Academy also rolled out customised first aid courses tailored to meet the needs of different people. Besides that, SRC also focused on being a thought leader to galvanise public interest in humanitarian issues. Mr William also played an instrumental role in developing the Volunteer Service Pathway to maximise the potential of volunteers based on interests, preferences and their leadership skills. Besides strengthening SRC’s local presence, Mr William also sharpened its disaster response by building a strong volunteer pool, and deploying volunteers within 48 hours of a disaster.

Given his diplomatic background, Mr William saw the importance of engaging the diplomatic community. In 2018, he conceived the Diplomatic Night to bring the Diplomatic community together, as partners of SRC.

We would like to thank Mr William for shaping SRC into an organisation that is relevant to the times, in catering its services to the needs of the vulnerable in our society.

Singapore Red Cross Awards 2016 honours 26 individuals and seven organisations that were recognised for their invaluable contributions to further our mission.

This is Mr Tee Tua Ba. After an illustrious career in public service, Mr Tee first joined the Singapore Red Cross (SRC) as a Council Member. Thereafter, he took on the helm as SRC’s Chairman since 2009.

Under his leadership, SRC has attained a few key milestones. Amongst them was the operationalisation of the Disaster Response Emergency Fund (DREF) which enabled SRC to effectively respond to disasters within 48 hours instead of waiting for public donations to pour in. The changes brought about by the constitutional review marked another accomplishment as SRC became a more nimble organisation capable of responding more quickly to changes in the landscape. Another triumph was in the area of volunteer management. To effectively empower volunteers, volunteers were regrouped based on special interest groups. A volunteer career pathway was instituted to recruit, train, develop and empower volunteers to uplift the lives of the vulnerable, enhance community resilience while honing their leadership abilities. The SRC Awards was established to recognise and motivate volunteers, donors and partners for their contributions, thereby boosting the morale of the stakeholders.

Yet, his proudest moment as SRC Chairman was when SRC was awarded the Charity Governance Award in 2013, the Charity Transparency Awards in 2016 and 2017 respectively. The awards attested that the model SRC adopted in terms of good governance, good leadership, benchmarking, gathering public feedback, training and upgrading, addressing conflicts of interest and other ethical methods was effective. To him, the awards were the culmination of various successful changes brought about through the Constitutional Review and the incorporation of corporate governance principles and practices.

Our utmost respect to Mr Tee and other volunteers who have given so much of themselves to our humanitarian cause, shaping the Singapore Red Cross into what it is today. We salute you.
